The room dedicated to the meeting of the Tamaranean Elder Council practically smelled of luxury and wealth. The finest wood in the system, carved delicately and carefully by hand, made the table and chairs. The softest silks and velvets made up the curtains and rugs and huge tapastries. Fine wine and a selection of odd delicacies sat on the table, the five chairs occupied by the most powerful men in the kingdom. The string pullers and rule makers, the ones who worked in the shadows, advising the Queen of the correct paths to take. Yes, she truely had the most power, but they were the influences.
The head of the council, Koora'r, an elderly man who's hair had once been a firey red - one of the most distinguishable traits of their people - but was now a snow white colour, sat at the head of the table, his long beard and rich purple robes giving him a grand aura, even though he was frail. "The time has finally come to name the next ruler of the throne. Although the Queen is still in good health, thank X'Hal, for the intrest of the kingdom, we must decide and soon."
"The people grow restless." The second eldest man, Nath'r, whos hair was just as white but lacked a beard, agreed. "Kaland'r won't do? He is the Prince. And she has no other heirs."
"Hah!" A third man, whos hair still held the slightest hint of red, with a crooked nose. "That flightless child? He may be an excellent warrior, but in that case, put him in charge of our armies. I refuse - as I'm sure the people will too - to have a King who cannot fly!"
"Now, now Gall'r, our Queen cannot fly either and the people do not seem disquiet." Thall'r, the third eldest man, who's hair was salt and pepper coloured - with more of the former than the latter - stated good naturedly.
"That's because she has other abilities! None that were passed on to the Prince!" Gall'r sneered. "A King with no abilities is weak. We cannot allow our kingdom to look so pitiful."
"Gall'r brings up a point." Koora'r stated, his voice dry and crackling with age. "But more worryingly, is the fact that this is the fourth child in three generations that does not have our natural gift of flight. Queen Luand'r's two siblings, Queen Komand'r herself and now her son."
"Could it be in the blood?" Nath'r asked, thoughtfully, resting his elbows on the table and steepling his fingers. He was the most scientific of the elders, and often seen as the smartest.
"Blasphemy!" Gall'r shouted, standing up and slamming his fist on the table. "Treason! Dare you suggest the bloodline of our Royal family is impure and flawed!"
"Gall'r!" Thall'r called out, shock in his voice. "We do not accuse our fellow elders of such things! It was simply a theory."
"Thall'r is correct. Be seated Gall'r." Koora'r ordered firmly, and reluctantly, the enranged man sat down, glaring at the now cowed Nath'r. "Continue Nath'r."
"Ah...yes...as I was saying..." The man in question cleared his throat, glancing warily across the table at the younger man. "Studies from other planets show that inbreeding of the blood lines causes many problems. Cousin's marrying...niece and uncles..."
"The reason for marriages within the family is to keep the blood pure and untainted!" Gall'r growled.
"Gentlemen." The final elder - although the name was unfitting, as he was still rather young, compared to the others. Whilst all the other men were over 60 years, he was in his late 30s, early 40s, his red hair barely sprinkled with gray, and was undoubtably handsom. - finally spoke, his voice smooth and calm, with just a hint of amusement. "I believe we have moved away from the original point to the meeting."
"You are correct, Mathia'r. I assume you have something of use to tell us?" Kooma'r replied, his green eyes now giving the youngest his full attention.
"Quite so. I believe we have forgotten about another member of our dear Royal family." With a flourish, he pulled out a scroll from his robes, unfurling it and placing it on the table. On it, was a detailed family tree, every word scrawled by hand in neat caligraphy, going back hundreds of years. Small, hand drawn portraits of each member of the Royal family, along with names, dates of birth, death and marriage. It was complicated yet elegant, a spiders web of lines. "The ever beautiful Koriand'r." He pointed to the bottom of the exposed scroll, the bottom still rolled up. The picture he pointed to showed a beautiful girl, no older than 16.
"Princess Koriand'r was banished, never to return." Thall'r said quietly. It was still a sore subject amongst the council. The princess was well loved by the whole kingdom, and even the ever angry Gall'r had a soft spot for the beautiful red head. "Surely you cannot suggest we have her rule. It would go against all our laws."
"Not to mention, she is only a few years younger than our Queen. We would have the same problem." Nath'r agreed.
"Oh, I'd never dream of going against our laws." Mathia'r smiled charmingly, which put the others on edge. Mathia'r, although young, was known to the other members as both brilliant and ruthless. Content to simply watch chaos unfold before cutting it with silky words and twisting things into his views. "But I recently found out, from a scout on Earth, the planet Princess Koriand'r calls home, that she had children with a human man." He rolled the scroll out full, showing one last picture, this time a portrait of two young people. Both eerily similar to each other with the same straight and narrow nose, full mouth and haunting eyes, the only differences being small ones, the narrower shape of the females face, the squarer jaw and more defined cheekbones of the male, and of course, the biggest difference, the hair styles. His short and, what they supposed, fashionable on earth, hers long and slightly wild looking. Both however, were undeniably beautiful. "Twins. Ricand'r and Analoriand'r. Although their father is nothing but a pitiful human, it is the best thing as a blank slate. No other powers to interfer with our Tamaranean ones."
"They have the air of the Tamaranean Royal Family, even in ink..." Thall'r said, his voice hushed. Could these two children, perhaps, be the solution to the question that had been rippling across the kingdom for months?
"I can send one of my men as an Embassador to Earth tomorrow. They can observe the twins." Mathia'r explained, smirking down at the picture. "If one of them has flight, he'll report it too me and then, we can speak to the Queen."
"She'll be unhappy. We all know she wishes for the Prince to be King."
"We can convince her when it comes to that. For now, let us rejoice that we may have found our new rulers." Koora'r stated, lifting his goblet of wine, the others following. "To Ricand'r and Analoriand'r."
As the others followed his action and toast, Mathia'r smirked.
